Third and fourth graders at Hemingway Elementary School joined with high school students in building a food computer. The computer is a box for growing food that is computer maintained and climate controlled.
Teacher Lydia Flynn developed a strong interest after showing Caleb Harper’s Ted Talk about “food computers” to het classes. One of her fourth grade students took a strong interest as well. The student tool the opportunity to address the class about everyone having their own food computer. She ended her impassioned speech by asking “Who’s with me?!”
Flynn realized that the coding and construction were beyond her capabilities, so she reached out to Wood River High School teacher Kevin Lupton and his engineering class.
“This is what engineers do,” said Lupton. “We’re programmed to solve problems.”
