Most kids who have any difficulty reading, lack the basic visual skills that are the building blocks of reading excellence. Kids from families in all walks of life are affected. Even the daughter of a former President nearly dropped out of school because she suffered from undetected learning-related vision problems.

Due to poor vision screenings, most of the these problems are missed in childhood, and continue through adulthood.

The following story was written by Luci Johnson Nugent and appeared in "Family Circle" Magazine. The Optometric Extension Foundation has generously given us their permission to reprint it.

"At 16, I was an underachiever in school and had been most of my life. I had been told- as the result of every kind of test imaginable- that I was a relatively bright child. There were times when I actually believed it and would go home and spend hours writing a paper I thought so brilliant a special assembly would be called to have it read- only to have my teacher tell me,
"Oh, Luci can't you see where you made mistakes?"
(But that was the crux of the problem. I couldn't really see.)"

Number 1 Reading Problem in America

Undeveloped Visual Skills.  Kids today aren’t doing the same things you did as a kid that developed the eyesight and vision skills needed to be a good reader. And schools are not testing kids to find out whether they have the visual skills needed to read what is required.

Remember when you were a kid? How did you spend most of your free time? You played outdoors, right? You rode your bike, climbed trees, built forts, played catch, drew and followed maps, and made up lots of new outdoor games. Indoors, you played board games, wrote letters, made up card games, played jacks and built things with tinker toys.

You didn’t know it then, but all those things gave you the skills you needed to be able to read.

You learned:

  • How to track a moving object (then you could move your eyes from line to line easily when you read)

  • Eye-hand coordination (copying from the board to the paper)

  • Developed peripheral vision (allowed you to see more words at once and read faster)

  • Learned to tell right from left, b’s from d’s, p’s from q’s (laterality and directionality in reading terms)
Today – guess where most kids are? Indoors – and what are they doing? You guessed it, they are watching T.V., spending countless hours on the computer and playing video games. While these are not bad things in themselves, they don’t develop the visual skills needed to make them good readers.

When kids get to school, most of them only get a brief eyesight screening that tells whether they can see a certain size letter from 20 feet away. This is done using the Snellen Eye Chart, which was developed in the 1850’s to see if a child could read the chalkboard from the back of the room.

This chart has nothing to do with reading comprehension at 16 inches, nor does it tell whether the child can understand and make meaning from what they read.

20/20 Eyesight Is Not Good Enough!

Answer these questions:

  Does your child lose his/her place on the page?

  Does your child skip lines?

  Do they reverse words when reading out loud?

  Does your child complain about reading?

  Has your child been called Lazy? Inattentive? ADHD / ADD?

  Do their test scores show that they are bright but still not doing well?

  Does your child often become distracted when reading?

  Do they seem to skip over punctuation as if it isn't there?

  Does your child have 20/20 eyesight and still have reading problems?

  Does your child re-read things they just read?

  Does your child know the word on one page but not the next?


If your child has 20/20 eyesight, it only means that they can see a certain sized letter from 20 feet away. This distance acuity is not good enough information about what your child sees on the printed page. It does not tell you whether your child understands what he or she reads.

Visual Perception Problems Can be Easily Corrected

Vision is a learned skill, like walking or talking. Most of us are born with eyesight but need to learn to use our eyes together as a team for good vision. If you checked any of the boxes above, your child's reading problems are the result of untrained visual skills.

This often results in low reading comprehension levels or behavioral problems due to the frustration your child feels. They may be told that they are not trying "hard enough" or "not concentrating", when in fact, their visual system is unprepared for the daily vision activities needed for proficient reading.

Don't let your child suffer the embarrassment of poor reading skills.

Children must have both good eyesight and good visual skills to be proficient readers.
However, "eyesight" and "vision" are not the same.

Eyesight is the ability to see (acuity) and the eye's responses to the light coming into it.

Vision is the ability to make meaning of what you see, and interpret the information coming through the eyes.

Many children score 20/20 eyesight on the Snellen Test (basic eye chart). Often they still have poor visual skills that interfere with their ability to read, copy from book to paper, copy from the chalkboard or write in a straight line (not uphill or downhill).

The Snellen Test 20/20 eyesight refers to the fact that a certain size letter can be seen from 20 feet away. It does not give information about the skills needed for the act of reading at a distance of about 16 inches from the printed page.

20/20 eyesight does not let a parent or teacher know which types of reading errors a child may be making. Also, many standard eye exams are performed in minutes with kids waiting at the end of the line, memorizing the chart. A true picture of what actually happens when the child reads all day long is not seen.

Since most children do not know that other students may see the printed page differently than they do, they may simply feel that they are "dumb" or not smart enough to make the letters stay still or stop changing.
