Reading Comprehension
Does your child struggle with reading?

Read The Shocking News
About America's Children!

Dear Friend,

You may find this a little more than shocking...

According to the National Center for Education Statistics,

Over 68% of America's 4th & 8th & 12th graders
are not reading at grade level!

It's not your child's fault. And it's not your fault either.

Most kids who have any difficulty reading, lack the basic visual skills that are the building blocks of reading excellence. Kids from families in all walks of life are affected. Even the daughter of a former President nearly dropped out of school because she suffered from undetected learning-related vision problems.

Photo Graph of Luci Johnson Nugent When President Lyndon Johnson was in office, his daughter, Luci Johnson, suffered from poor grades and learning difficulties due to learning related vision problems. Her story shows us that anyone, regardless of status or income, may struggle with visual or perceptual dysfunction. Due to poor vision screenings, most of the these problems are missed in childhood, and continue through adulthood.

The following story was written by Luci Johnson Nugent and appeared in "Family Circle" Magazine. The Optometric Extension Foundation has generously given us their permission to reprint it.

"At 16, I was an underachiever in school and had been most of my life. I had been told- as the result of every kind of test imaginable- that I was a relatively bright child. There were times when I actually believed it and would go home and spend hours writing a paper I thought so brilliant a special assembly would be called to have it read- only to have my teacher tell me,
"Oh, Luci can't you see where you made mistakes?"
(But that was the crux of the problem. I couldn't really see.)"

Number 1 Reading Problem in America And The Worst Reading Crisis in History

Undeveloped Visual Skills.  Kids today aren't doing the same things you did as a kid that developed the eyesight and vision skills needed to be a good reader. And schools are not testing kids to find out whether they have the visual skills needed to read what is required.

Remember when you were a kid? How did you spend most of your free time? You played outdoors, right? You rode your bike, climbed trees, built forts, played catch, drew and followed maps, and made up lots of new outdoor games. Indoors, you played board games, wrote letters, made up card games, played jacks and built things with tinker toys.

You didn't know it then, but all those things gave you the skills you needed to be able to read.

You learned:
                                                                                            Vision Therapy

  • How to track a moving object (then you could move your eyes from line to line easily when you read)

  • Eye-hand coordination (copying from the board to the paper)

  • Developed peripheral vision (allowed you to see more words at once and read faster)

  • Learned to tell right from left, b's from d's, p's from q's (laterality and directionality in reading terms)

Today - guess where most kids are? Indoors - and what are they doing? You guessed it, they are watching T.V., spending countless hours on the computer and playing video games. While these are not bad things in themselves, they don't develop the visual skills needed to make them good readers.

When kids get to school, most of them only get a brief eyesight screening that tells whether they can see a certain size letter from 20 feet away. This is done using the Snellen Eye Chart, which was developed in the 1850's to see if a child could read the chalkboard from the back of the room.

This chart has nothing to do with reading comprehension at 16 inches, nor does it tell whether the child can understand and make meaning from what they read.

20/20 Eyesight Is Not Good Enough!

Answer these questions:

Does your child lose his/her place on the page?

  Does your child skip lines?

Do they reverse words when reading out loud?

Does your child complain about reading?

Has your child been called Lazy? Inattentive? ADHD / ADD?

Do their test scores show that they are bright but still not doing well?

Does your child often become distracted when reading?

Do they seem to skip over punctuation as if it isn't there?

Does your child have 20/20 eyesight and still have reading problems?

Does your child re-read things they just read?

Does your child know the word on one page but not the next?

If your child has 20/20 eyesight, it only means that they can see a certain sized letter from 20 feet away. This distance acuity is not good enough information about what your child sees on the printed page. It does not tell you whether your child understands what he or she reads.

Visual Perception Problems Can be Easily Corrected

Vision is a learned skill, like walking or talking. Most of us are born with eyesight but need to learn to use our eyes together as a team for good vision. If you checked any of the boxes above, your child's reading problems are the result of untrained visual skills.

This often results in low reading comprehension levels or behavioral problems due to the frustration your child feels. They may be told that they are not trying "hard enough" or "not concentrating", when in fact, their visual system is unprepared for the daily vision activities needed for proficient reading.

Don't let your child suffer the embarrassment of poor reading skills.

Children must have both good eyesight and good visual skills to be proficient readers.
However, "eyesight" and "vision" are not the same.

Eyesight is the ability to see (acuity) and the eye's responses to the light coming into it.

Vision is the ability to make meaning of what you see, and interpret the information coming through the eyes.

Many children score 20/20 eyesight on the Snellen Test (basic eye chart). Often they still have poor visual skills that interfere with their ability to read, copy from book to paper, copy from the chalkboard or write in a straight line (not uphill or downhill).

The Snellen Test 20/20 eyesight refers to the fact that a letter 3/8 inches

high can be seen from 20 feet away. It does not give information about the skills needed for the act of reading at a distance of about 16 inches from the printed page.

20/20 eyesight does not let a parent or teacher know which types of reading errors a child may be making. Also, many standard eye exams are performed in minutes with kids waiting at the end of the line, memorizing the chart. You cannot get a true picture

of what really happens when your child reads

all day long.

Since most children do not know that other students may see the printed page differently than they do, they may simply feel that they are "dumb" or not smart enough to make the letters stay still or stop changing.

In order to determine the real reason your child struggles to read, it is important to take your child to a developmental optometrist before beginning any vision exercise activity program.

Resources:  Take Your Child To A Developmental Optometrist First

A Developmental Optometrist is specially trianed to give a comprehensive eye exam, that relates to both eye health and visual/perceptual/motor and other skills your child needs to learn, read, and even play sports.

You can find one of these specially trained doctors at www.covd.org or at www.oep.org.

If you have an infant, former President Jimmy Carter is the national spokesperson for InfantSee at infantsee.org and recommends that you take your infant, up to 12 months, for a proper vision screening to rule out such things as lazy eye, which if undetected, can lead to something as serious as blindness.

Talk to your doctor and find out whether your child can benefit from vision therapy along with the additional exercises in this kit in between therapy sessions.

Many eye problems are complex, and only your doctor has the specialized training and equipment in the doctor's office to help your child.   Once your child has had this exam, many doctors recommend vision therapy or a combination of vision therapy and the vision exercises in the I Read I Succeed ™ Kit.  In fact, many parents and teachershave found that they can...

turn their child's reading problems around

Vision Therapy for Excellent Reading Comprehension

NOW is exactly the right time to teach your child the visual skills they need to be an excellent reader this school year, and every year from now on.

REMEMBER:  Before using any vision exercise program, we highly recommend that you take your child to a developmental optometrist for a comprehensive, vision-related learing exam so you know specifically why your child struggles to read, and to check for any eye-health, or visual perceptual problems.  You can find a doctor who specializes in this type of exam at www.covd.org or www.oep.org. If you have an infant, go to www.infantsee.org to find a doctor and listen to what former President Jimmy Carter has to say about his grandchild, who suffered with a lazy eye that was undetected during the typical eye screenings mentioned above.

Your child is smarter than their grades.  Show them how to boost their self-esteem with the same strategies that the A+ students use. Do not wait until later in the year when they might be suffering with learning issues that they can solve today.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have your child

Vision Therapy

 for Excellent

Reading

"My son was struggling with reading. He would lose his place and made lots of reversals in both reading and writing. After reading about perceptual problems and vision therapy, I had my son's vision tested by a developmental optometrist. The doctor said his binocular vision (ability to use both eyes together as a team) was at 20% efficiency. I showed the doctor Pat Wyman's Eye-Q Reading Inventory and the I Read I Succeed kit.  He said it would help to also use these activities at home. In less than 8 weeks, working only about 10-15 minutes a day, my son's binocular vision re-tested at 80% efficiency! His reading improved dramatically and so did his writing!"

Kathy Smith of Delton, Michigan

"I Read I Succeed is highly practical and necessary. This material regarding vision screening and reading should be required in teacher preparation courses and given to every parent when they enroll their child in school. Thanks Pat, for promoting such a worthy cause!"

Donna Morales of Fremont, California

"Thank you for this wonderful, informative resource with your Eye-Q Reading Inventory and information on vision therapy.  You’ve been so generous with your time, speaking with me on the telephone, and building my confidence as a teacher so I can help more students be successful in reading.

With your help, and the practical information on your website, I’ve been able to tell parents that other children have improved their reading abilities with vision therapy.  Then, I can also easily provide them the list of COVD doctors and other  developmental optometrists in their area since you also put the COVD and OEP website on your webpage.  I know this information will help so many children to succeed in reading."

Does your child have the visual
skills required to read correctly?

The Free Eye-Q Reading Inventory ™will help you determine whether your child's reading problems result from undetected problems in the basic visual skills essential for reading and many other activities.

Weaknesses in any one area may interfere with academic progress and the child's ability to reach his or her full potential.

Give your child the Free Eye-Q Reading Inventory ™ to determine what is actually happening when your child reads.

Even if you did not check any of the Pre-Test boxes on the Free Eye-Q Reading Inventory, the American Optometric Association recommends that you take your child for a comprehensive, learning-related vision exam.  You can find a doctor at www.covd.org, www.oep.org or www.infantsee.org.  Then, ask your doctor whether your child can benefit from the exercises found in:

P.S.      I Read I Succeed Life-time Guarantee

Over the past 25 years, I've personally helped thousands of children with undetected vision problems. In fact, when my own daughter was asked to repeat the first grade due to reading problems and I did not know why, I discovered that her visual skills were very weak and that she had trouble tracking from line to line.

Once she finished her vision therapy, she could read above her grade level, and today, she is fulfilling her life-long dream of becoming a medical doctor.  She is in her fourth year of medical school.

For well over 20 years, from the time vision therrapy changed her life, I became a "mother on a mission" to help every child read at or above grade level and discover how much vision therapy could help.

I collaborated with several developmental optometrists and put together the I Read... I Succeed  kit.

The exercises in this kit have shown many children exactly how to strengthen their vision skills and taught them to enjoy reading.

The I Read I Succeed guarantee is this: After taking your child to a developmental optometrist and using this program with your child or student, (with their permission as homework activities) I expect that you will see a dramatic improvement in their reading ability.

If you do as your developmental optometrist recommends, and it includes using the I Read I Succeed Kit, giving this program a fair and honest try for 12-15 weeks, if you do not see improvement, call me and I will write you a check on the spot.

I Read... I Succeed can improve the life of every child who has difficulty reading due to under-developed vision skills.  Iin the process, your child will become happier, learn more confidently, and you can expect a calmer home life..
