When hunger starts to rumble in your stomach, what do you reach for? Potato chips? A chocolate bar? Some fruit snacks?

Although convenient and tasty, these and similar snacks have more calories, sugar, and fat than nutrients or health value. And unfortunately, they contribute to 40% of daily calories for children and adolescents, according to the Center for Disease Control. The percentage for adults isn’t much better.

If you’re trying to eat healthier, or trying to shed some extra pounds, throw out the packaged, processed snacks and munch on these 5 delicious fruits that burn fat instead.

1. African Mango

Few fruits that burn fat are as popular right now as the African Mango. This exotic fruit was launched to “Super Fat Burner” status after multiple studies showed that it increases the body’s sensitivity to insulin, which is involved in your body’s fat burning processes. African Mango was also shown to increase the body’s sensitivity to the hunger-reducing hormone leptin.

There is one catch though: it’s not the fruit that burns fat. It’s the seeds.

In the most notorious study of African Mango, performed at a university in Cameroon, participants who consumed 300 mg of the seed extract daily noticed a decrease in body weight, body fat, and waist circumference. Their heart health, cholesterol, blood glucose, adiponectin, and leptin levels were also improved.

3. Raspberry Ketones

Besides antioxidants, raspberries contain another substance which makes them one of the best fruits that burn fat: ketones.

Ketones give raspberries their sweet aroma; but studies have shown that they also cause the fat within your cells to break down, which helps your body burn fat faster.

The recommended daily intake of vitamin C for an adult woman is 75 mg. per day and 90 mg for an adult man. A single, average-sized orange can hold up to 70 mg of vitamin C!

5. Apples

“If you’re overweight and want some help losing weight, start eating foods high in fiber,” recommends Kathleen M. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD. “[Fiber] acts like a sponge, it’s slower to be digested and absorbed, so it makes you feel full.”

Apples have more fiber than most fruits. For example, a medium apple has about 3.5 grams of fiber. And keep the skin on! If you peel the apple, its fiber content goes down to 1.7 grams.

Research shows that you need 35 to 45 grams of fiber a day to feel less hungry and lose weight. Obviously, you won’t get that much fiber from eating apples, but they are one of the best sources for this hunger-reducing nutrient.

If most of the foods you eat are high in empty calories, added sugars, and solid fats, it’s probably time to make some substitutions.
