With today’s economic climate the way it is, it’s never too early to teach our children how to spend and save their money properly while empowering them to give to charities and help them become more financially responsible.

Dr. Jo Webber, Chairman, CEO, and Founder of Virtual Piggy, the first e-commerce solution that enables kids to manage and spend money within a parent-controlled environment.

Virtual Piggy works like this: A family signs up for the website, creating profiles for each child. Parents can add credit cards, approve spending limits or specific retailers, and set a goal for charitable contributions or savings.  When the child goes to a Parent-approved online retailer, he or she can pay by clicking on Virtual Piggy’s button on the checkout screen. The parent receives an alert — via email or mobile — allowing them knowledge of the purchase and final approval.

Each transaction is subject to a parents approval, for tighter controls on younger or more profligate children. This system allows the child to feel like they have the power to make their own monetary decisions and gives them the tools they need to become financially responsible.

With today’s economic climate the way it is, it’s never too early to teach our children how to spend and save their money properly while empowering them to give to charities and help them become more financially responsible. Out of desire to help her own children, Dr. Webber founded the company in 2008 to create a system where parents can set limits, vet purchases, and authorize charges to their credit cards. By 2011, Virtual Piggy received a surge in interest from merchants and today has over forty on their roster which continues to grow each week.

Most recently, the company announced that Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning actress Sela Ward has joined Dr. Jo Webber on Virtual Piggy’s advisory board. She joined because she believes in the importance of Virtual Piggy and the positive affect it has on her children.
