Action for Healthy Kids® (AFHK), a national nonprofit which fights childhood obesity, undernourishment and physical inactivity by helping schools become healthier places so kids can live healthier lives, launched its Every Kid Healthy Pledge to rally 100,000 people around efforts to ensure every child in the country is healthy and ready to learn.

“After decades of growing portion sizes and cuts in PE classes or after-school sports programs, we’ve reached a crisis: one in three kids in the United States is overweight or obese and could face serious health problems as a result,” explains AFHK CEO Rob Bisceglie. “But, if people pull together, we can end this crisis. That’s why we’re asking everyone to take a stand by signing onto our Every Kid Healthy Pledge.  Once they do, we’ll show them a few simple steps to take to stay informed and get involved.”

Those steps, which range from attending webinars and conferences to donating or volunteering at a local school, give Pledge takers a variety of options to do as much or as little as they’d like in support of this important cause, which is just an extension of AFHK’s long-standing work.

Through thousands of volunteers around the country, the organization delivers physical activity and nutrition lessons and changes to schools so kids can eat nutritiously and play every day.

In fact, as detailed in its 2011 annual report, AFHK’s growing school-based wellness programs and initiatives reached 8.5 million students in 20,250 schools across the country last year. Through the Every Kid Healthy Pledge, AFHK plans to reach even more.

“Everyone, no matter who they are, what they do for a living, and whether or not they have children, can help improve wellness opportunities for kids in school. Our Every Kid Healthy Pledge is an easy first step,” says Bisceglie.
