The months and weeks leading up to the removal of your braces can seem to stretch on forever.

It can seem like there is going to be no life after braces; that you will be stuck with this metal in your mouth for eternity!

All dramatics aside, the day will come when the only thing in your mouth is your teeth again. But, don’t be seduced too quickly by the smooth and straight feeling and head straight to seek out bubble gum and popcorn quite yet.

After you have your braces removed there are a few things you still need to know.

  • Before you get your braces off, be sure to take a picture. Although you might think you don’t want to ever remember wearing them, I promise, you will someday. It will be very easy to forget how you looked and how they felt once you have moved on with your beautiful new smile.
  • Once you braces are off, in order to maintain the new position of your teeth and prevent them from moving again, you orthodontist will give you a retainer. WEAR IT. ALL THE TIME. Simply put, without following the doctors’ orders and wearing it a certain amount of time each day, you teeth will shift and all that pain you went through to make your teeth so gorgeous will be time wasted. When you first get your retainers, it will take some time for your mouth and tongue to get used to maneuvering around the wires, so you might have trouble talking. The solution to this problem is to talk more. All the time. Sing, shout, whisper, it doesn’t matter, but the more you talk the sooner you mouth will get used to your new appliance. Be sure to keep your retainers clean and keep them in a safe place where they can’t get thrown away or chewed up by the family dog.
  • After a day or two, feel free to chow down on all those forbidden foods that you had to avoid while you had your braces on. Stock up on bubble gum, taffy, popcorn, corn on the cob and all of your favorites. It is usually advised that you wait a day or two to help your teeth settle into the final position before you go to strictly a taffy only diet!
  • Smile big and often. At everyone that you meet. You earned a beautiful smile and it’s a perfect time to show it off!
