Taking online classes and getting your degree through distance education has a variety of benefits, but it takes a good amount of motivation. If you’re someone who gets easily distracted and works better with visual presentation, you might not be suited for online schooling. However, those who work well on their own and learn through text will do very well.

Online EducationThe following are some motivational tips to help you be productive and complete your online courses at a reasonable time.

  • Eliminate Distractions

The first thing you need to do is eliminate your distractions, or at least reduce them as much as possible. If others will be home while you work on your schooling, try to find a quiet place in your home for studying. This should preferably be your own room or office where you can shut the door. If you can’t do this, at least choose a quiet area in a living room or space outside where it won’t get much foot traffic. Turn off your television and cell phone while you study. Noise canceling headphones can help you to avoid distractions and tune out noises around the house.

  • Progress Charts

Keep progress charts of how much you have done, what you still need to work on, and how many classes you’ve finished as a whole. By seeing how much you have done versus how much you have left to complete, you’ll stay motivated to maintain a good level of productivity. It helps to see how much you have left to do compared to how quickly you want to get your degree. Make sure to track smaller goals as well so that you see you are getting towards your goals, even if the finish line is far away.

  • Virtual Study Groups

Just because you’re going to school online doesn’t mean you can’t have a study group. Get together with others in your course and study together virtually. You can do this via Skype or with the school’s discussion group forums. You can also create your own study groups if you’re able to get in touch with your peers on other sites such as Google Groups. This is also a great way to meet different people. You might be a nanny in New York and end up studying with a manufacturing worker in Florida as you work towards your degree in business.

  • Reward Your Progress

As you track your progress, give yourself rewards for meeting each small or large goal. This can be something small like taking a day off from school or a monetary award like some spending money for shopping or a movie.

Motivation is the most powerful skill you can have in online education, so keep these tips in mind.
