Tips To Prepare For Education Abroad

Sending your preteen or teenager abroad for a college education is a good idea. There are many great opportunities that your child can benefit from by studying abroad especially in the UK. Ultimately, the security and safety of your child is of the utmost importance. Below are some of the things that you need to know before you send your child for abroad education.

This includes finding out about the culture, laws, dress, language, history and customs of the destination country. Involve your child in leaning a few local words and phrases that may come in handy once they reach their destination. Part of the research also includes reading testimonials and experiences of other students in the country, as well as asking the program administrator or student adviser about any concerns you might have.

Learn to let go

When you send your child abroad, you will need to let go at a certain level. The letting go process should start long before the student has to depart so as to prepare you mentally and psychologically. Rather than being a supervisor, be a guide instead, allowing your child to make most of the decision related with studying abroad. Expect that your child will not contact you every day, and talk to other parents who have sent their children abroad especially about how they cope with letting go of their child.

Packing

Help your student with packing; pack wise and pack light. Include a few extra passport photos in case they need them. If your child wears prescription glasses, get them an extra pair or two just in case. Ask your student to practice carrying their luggage as they might be doing a lot of that in the first few days before they settle in to the new country. Remember to pack a copy of the prescription in case the child is on medication, as well as packing an extra supply of their medication. Also remember to pack a doctor’s note in case there are any problems at customs to do with bringing medication to the host country.

Communication

It is very important for you and your child to keep open and regular communication. It doesn’t have to be every single day; every other day is just fine. Have a communication plan before the student departs. Social media is an interactive and cost effective form of communication. Consider both starting a blog to keep each other up to date on what is going on in each end. Also consider using Skype or international calling cards rather than paying for cell phone roaming charges which can often be exorbitant. Both students and parents should also carry emergency contacts on their person at all times.

Finances

The best way to ensure that your child has a comfortable stay in their host country is to ensure that they know how to effectively manage their finances. Come up with a budget that you are both comfortable with, and teach your child how to withdraw a little money at a time from the ATM such as on a weekly basis.

The UKBA is a great source of information for work permits, permission to stay and other immigration related matters that you should look into before sending your child abroad.
