Learning for children occurs when a number of factors occur. Since every child is unique and has individual learning styles and needs, it can be somewhat difficult to pinpoint a path that every child will experience learning success on.
Some children have a natural aptitude for learning and superior brain function that enables fast-paced learning. On the other hand, others may not be so lucky to possess such an innate ability to learn at an optimum level. However, one thing is certain – almost children are endowed with an ability to refine their brain skills to learn at the optimum best.
Experts suggest us that learning among children depends on how well they use their brain especially the left and right lobes. When they learn how to use both lobes, they can enhance their earning potential by a degree or more. In other words, they may need to learn how to balance their brain functions so that they can receive maximum amounts of information, absorb, index and organize them for easier learning. Balancing the brain is perhaps the most useful technique that children could use to enhance learning.
Before learning more about brain balancing, we may also need know about a unique concept called left and right brain learning. Some children have a stronger left brain while others possess a strong right brain. Child experts believe that most left brained children are more likely to be analytical in their approach while almost right brained children are creative. However, one-sided learning may not make up a whole-brain child. In fact, learning by using one lobe may be counter-productive to children. Hence, the main focus is to use both lobes of brain to help children optimize learning. In a way, children may need to balance their brain functions to put both lobes to maximum use.
The concept of right and left brain learning was suggested by a former Nobel laureate, Roger Wolcott Sperry, who elaborated that both brain lobes are different and they help children in certain types of learning.
What is brain balancing?
To ensure optimum and productive learning, both brain lobes should work in combination and in a seamless manner. When two lobes of brain work together, children will get many benefits like:
- Better digestion and immune functions
- Enhanced intellectual abilities
- Better motor skills
- Superior digestive and hormone systems
Before balancing brain, parents may need to identify in which lobe they are stronger. Those children who are weaker in their left brain tend to be very poor in linguistic skills while those are weak in their right side tend to be poor in motor skills. Balancing brain functions also means introducing activities that help both sides and to complement one skill with the other. Balancing brain function also means replacing weaker functions of the brain with stronger ones that eventually helps in boosting acquisition of important skills.
