Sometimes a hike is more than an enjoyable day in nature, when teachers learn outdoor lessons through hiking.
Teachers at the Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center in Bushkill Township participated in a workshop that was designed to help bring outdoor lessons in maps, ecology, and hiking to their students.
The indoor lessons were on topics such as topography, compass reading and writing nature journals. After the class, teachers then went on an outdoor hike so they could apply what they learned.
While the teachers came from different backgrounds, they all were united in the goal of getting their students to engage in outdoor learning. Physical activity enhances learning, and stimulates thinking, even in subjects like reading, math, and science.
