New opportunities for students learning Chinese language and culture are coming to high schools, as Mandarin Chinese is the world’s most popular language.
In Kingsport, Tennessee, city schools have partnered with the Confucius Institute, for creating cultural exchanges with the non profit, and learning more about Chinese language and culture.
Dozens of students have continued to sign up for the classes, now in their second year. Some of the students intend to use their language skills in their career plans.
For example Dobyns-Bennett High School freshman Ben McNabb has spent the past two years living in China, and this is his first semester back in the United States. He wants to work in international business and signed up for Chinese at school. “If you’re going to go to China and be present in China as a company, you have to be able to speak Mandarin,” McNabb said.
He is at level three Chinese. McNabb plans to continue through college, and improve on his basic conversation skills.
