A math coach believes that everyone could be a math person, and he is working to make sure his students know that.
“We used to hear it in terms of, well, these students are math people and these students aren’t math people,” said Ontario School District math coach Steve Wyborney. “But sometimes there’s just not as much exposure to math.”
Wyborney’s theory that anyone can be good at math if they put their minds to it is about communication of fundamental concepts. As district math coach, he is in a position that is new as of this year.
In 2005 he was Oregon’s Teacher of the year, and has written a series of math books called “25 Common Core Math Lessons.”
Wyborney’s goal in his new position is to streamline the teaching of math so that students will experience success at graduation and beyond.
“We want to get our kids up to speed early so they can be successful,” Wyborney said.
