In a surprising development, some schools are finding kids learning more with laptops than they were able to learn before. Seventh graders at Dempsey Middle School are now equipped with laptop computers.  Teachers are pleasantly surprised with how much can be accomplished.

According to Superintendent Paul Craft, the Chromebooks that are available to students for school and personal use are expanding instruction methods through the use of technology.”These devices enable teachers to create personalized assignments and engage students in more group work,” he said. “We’re not changing what we’re teaching, but we’re changing the way we are teaching.”
The initiative is known as Dempsey One-to-One. At first, teacher Michael Freado was skeptical. “To say I had reservations would be an understatement,” Freado said. “I felt like I was just getting good as a teacher with the pencil-and-paper method and I just felt this would add a lot of variables that I wasn’t ready for.”Friedo was concerned about the problems of losing the internet, or what could happen if students forgot or broke their laptops.

“However, once school started and we started using the devices, I found that my reservations were unfounded,” he said. “We have tech support in the building; that has been great at easing my trepidation. Having access to these laptops has made what I can do better and more efficient.”
