A key to inspiration and motivation may be the challenge to get students solving a million math problems.
At Daly Elementary School, each class is keeping track of how many math problems they solve. Once the numbers are recorded, students ask for more math work.
Because students are asking for more challenges, Daly principal Eric Larson is excited by the math challenge.
“They aren’t viewing it as homework – just math practice,” said Larson. “It is very exciting in that every child at Daly participates and contributes to the numbers. It has given the social climate of the school a culture blast. “The students just went nuts for it.”
Fourth grade teacher Jake Jessop is a 20 uear veteran teacher who developed the idea for the challenge. He intended to keep it just for fourth graders, but soon realized that the program could be a schoolwide challenge.
