Districts are taking a new approach to standards, making teacher training important for Common Core State Standards implementation.
Of particular focus is the necessity for a new approach to math instruction. Conceptual understanding and real workd use is the focus, not just rote memorization.
In Oregon, rigorous standards were adopted by the state in 2010, and educators say teachers must take a new approach.
“People are seeing a need for teachers to teach mathematics different than the way we learned it,” said Amy McQueen, David Douglas School District math specialist.
With the help of a recent 1 million dollar grant, teachers will receive additional training in Oregon, and students will benefit. Currently students are often not achieving at high enough levels to be able to consider careers related to math or science fields.
“It’s just an amazing opportunity for our teachers to grow,” McQueen said.”(Experts) know best practices. They’re teaching people how to be the most effective math teachers that they can.”
