Elementary school students are building a buddy bench to build friendships.

Building a Buddy Bench to Build FriendshipsThis year, Rattlesnake elementary students have found a way to let other students know they are looking for a playmate.  They sit on the buddy bench their class made.

The parents of Dimitri Govertsen-Donaldson came up with the idea after seeing a video about a buddy bench that was made by a Pennsylvania boy.

The idea is pretty simple – If kids don’t have a playmate at recess, they can sit on the bench and other students will know they need to be included.

“I kind of needed it last year and I’m glad we have it this year, because maybe that’s happening to some other kids,” Govertsen-Donaldson said.

While building the buddy bench was fun for the class, it also allowed the students to put their math, public speaking, and problem solving  skills to use, said teacher Carrie Sweatland.
