Elementary school children have been showing family and friends how important understanding math in the real world is to success in many areas.
During a math Fair, Students at Oak Mountain Elementary School in Tennessee showed off their realworld understanding. They chose a topic they were interested in, then researched how math applied to that topic. The topics ranged from video games to travel around the world.
According to Sixth Grade teacher Jennifer Northrop, ” “Their assignment was to take any topic they’re passionate and come up with five ways that topic involves math,” Northrop explained. “Once they got started, it really wasn’t hard.”
Students enjoyed presenting their projects to family and friends.
“(The goal was) just to really learn that math is all around us,” Northrop said. “Everything we do and use involves math.”
The fair gave everyone an opportunity to see what the students were learning. many were amazed at how these young students can design an item, and need training in math and business skills.
