A study published in Obersity has found that excessive homework may affect kids’ weight, and boys may be particularly vulnerable.

According to the researchers, there was a link between high levels of mental work performed with stress, and indicators for obesity.  This was true among all children, but especially boys.

“While the design of this study does not support causation, it suggests that being stressed by schoolwork and exposed to a large extent to this activity could be linked to abdominal obesity,” the researchers said.

The sample in the study was taken from children enrolled in the Quebec Adiposity and Lifestyle Investigation in Youth (QUALITY) cohort, and was composed of white children aged 8 to 10 years with at least one biological parent who is obese.

The children completed questionnaires which identified the amount of time spent on homeone in a single day.  They were asked to describe their stress level regarding schoolwork, and wore a calibrated accelerometer.
