A home built by career center students appears much like any other home in the surrounding subdivision.
Featuring a red brick front, a two car garage, three bedrooms, two baths, and a full basement, the one story home still awaits flooring and finishing touches. The construction crew is unique; they are students at the Kankakee Area Career Center, and the home they build will be on sale to the general public.
The Career Center provides vocational classes to high school students throughout Kankakee County. Jeff Umphrey and Doug Enz are the construction instructors, and their enrollment is on the increase.
“We’ve gone way up in the last couple of years,” Enz says about enrollment.
The students learn on site practical skills. They get to do everything, including tile, paint, drywall, concrete work, and more under supervision. The standard, according to Umphrey, is “everything has to be right”.
