When kids are in the cookie business as part of their career exploration class, the sky is the limit for future aspirations.
Being a chef has always bee the dream of thirteen year old Kelby Self. However, she never really understood the possibilities of running her own business until she began to take Michelle Burgess’ career exploration class at Leslie Middle School.
Since then she not only knows how to bake cookies from scratch, but can also manage a team and knows the business basics of accounting, inventory, and marketing.
The pathway of growth that the program has experienced over the past 8 years is phenomenal. When Burgess started teaching the class was a full year program for students with disabilites. 12 students were enrolled. However within a few years, students from the general population became interested and now the class has opened up to everyone.
