Where does food come from? The garden, of course – way before the supermarket. Some kids may not make that connection but the kids at Seminole Elementary know very well how food grows.
They have an edible garden.
The students began the garden three years ago, as part of the Fairchild Challenge. They learn by seeing and doing.
“Kids don’t know much about the plant life cycle until they see it,” said Diana Peña, the Fairchild Challenge Elementary Coordinator.
The Fairchild Challenge is a school based environmental science competition in Miami Dade County. It began with middle and high school students and now includes elementary schools.
“It gives teachers a way to introduce environmental awareness in school,” she said. “We’ve been growing steadily.”
