The racehorses arent the only ones facing challenges, as students prepare for the Kentucky Derby Festival Academic Challenge.
The Festival is back after a five year hiatus, teaming up with Jefferson County Public Schools and Sullivan University, hosting a Derby Festival Academic Challenge.
The event features teams from different middle schools, answering questions on various topics. It is a quick recall event requiring fast thinking from the students.
“The Academic Challenge event is a great way to showcase the academic achievements of not only our local students, but also our public schools,” said Mike Berry, Kentucky Derby Festival President & CEO. “We’re excited to have it on our schedule in 2015.”
Several Jefferson County schools have incorporated the Kentucky Derby into their curriculum. Various activities in classrooms include making art that has a horse race theme, designing rain hats for the race, and a hobbyhorse race.
