Students from elementary and junior high schools participated in a Spanish spelling bee at Weber State University, inspired by the success of similar bees held in other states. Students from dual language immersion programs throughout Utah participated.

It appears that this was the first of many Spanish spelling bees, as students and teachers were glad to have participated. Fifth grader Raul Martinez from Dixie Sun Elementary won as best speller.

Associate professor Isabel Asensio is adviser for Sigma Delta Pi, a National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society on WSU’s campus. She said the group wanted to start a positive tradition on campus, and thought that a Spanish spelling bee would be successful. 

“The hardest part was sending an invite to all the schools,” Asensio said.  “I think most of the schools had some kind of spelling bee at their school but I also gave them the option to select their students since this was the first year.”
