Despite the obvious benefit for graduates of special education programs, there are fewer diploma options for special education students.
At the Greenburgh Academy in Yonkers NY where students with learning, behavioral and psychiatric disabilities attend, graduates are sometimes offered jobs.
Desirea Ribot graduated from Greenburgh. After graduation she stated working there as a teaching assistant.
Ribot did not pass all her exams, which disqualified her from receiving a diploma, but she was able to pass the Regents Competency Tests, which qualified her for a different type of New York State diploma. Without the diploma, her life would have been markedly different. “I would be working a minimum-wage job somewhere,” said Ribot, who is now pursuing a two year degree at Bronx Community College.
The option to receive the type of diploma Ribot received will not be available after this year. Diplomas are based on scores of the statewide Regents exams. The score receives determines the type of diploma.
