Candidates for high school positions on a board of education are jumping right into discussions of current issues, as students join the debate on dual language immersion.
In New Haven, student candidates were present as board members discussed the improvement of bilingual education. Seven candidates are confirmed, and six of those were present at the meeting.
Hillhouse High School rising junior Coral Ortiz is very familiar with bilingual education. She is a teaching assistant for a bilingual class. She wishes more teachers were aware of the needs of English language learners in the classroom
The students Sat in on a regular session of the school board and were able to witness how it functions. They were also able to witness a New committee, the Teaching and Learning committee. This was formed during the fall to publicly discuss several education concerns and debates.
