A Museum of Fine Arts is bringing students and ancient civilizations together.
In St Petersburg, Florida, the Museum of Fine Arts developed a program for educating middle school students about world art and culture. They have extended an invitation to every school in Pinellas County.
They charge nothing to the schools. Admission and the guidance given by volunteer docents is free.
For two hours, students connect with artwork they view and relate it to a civilization’s structure, religion, or government.
“It’s an opportunity then for the museum to become this learning lab for them,” said museum director of public programs Anna Glenn. “If we think about the times we were in our science classes and we had to walk through labs and identify and sort of site those evidences for what we were learning. That’s what the museum is transformed into during these field trips.”
