With the lack of women entering computer science fields, many educational institutions are discovering that coding camps for girls only makes a lot of sense.
Proponents of the programs say the need is acute. The number of women in math and science fields has risen nationally, but the proportionate number in computer science has dropped.
“It’s one of the few areas where the trend is going the wrong way,” said Helen Hu, Westminster professor of computer programming.
At the most basic level, the low numbers are glaringly apparent: college classrooms and summer programs for tech proficient young people have an extremely low female enrollment in computer subjects.
“When they’re open to all students,” Hu said, “the girls are not showing up.”
