The negative and positive effects of tweeting and texting in class have been measured in a new study. It turns out that while these activities are distracting, there are also some benefits depending on the use and intent.

Negative and Positive Effects of Tweeting And Texting in ClassA new study by the National Communication Association shows that students who are texting messages related to the subject scored higher than those who were texting other messages.

The study measured the frequency and the type of messages. Note taking is one of the positive uses of text message technology. The researchers concluded that texting about class material, whether in a message or as class notes helps students remember the lesson.

According to the authors of the study, “Sending or receiving relevant messages may allow students to engage in similar processes as those that occur during note-taking”.
