As new specialty schools develop students’ natural talents, school officials are seeing a growing interest in their unique programs for elementary school children.
In Sioux City, the plan is to have each school focus on Common Core designated subject areas.
Director of Elementary Education Brian Burnight says that the specialty elementary school program will prepare students to transition into the new middle school exploratory program, and later to career academy high schools.
The choices of buildings and designations were based on feedback from parents, staff, and administrators, with school board approval.
“I’m a big believer that if you can spark a kid’s interest in education and learning, they’re going to be successful,” Burnight said.
The specialty schools model is based upon the national magnet schools model.
Magnet Schools of America describes magnet schools as having a focused theme that specializes in “hands-on, minds-on” learning.
