A third grade teacher has found that using popular songs as a teaching tool is a great way to engage kids and help them retain lessons.
Kristen Borisuk of Hilton Head Elementary uses lyrics from songs by artists such as One Direction and Taylor Swift that her students are familiar with, and changes them to align with the curriculum standards of South Carolina.
“This is one way that my students really become engaged in the lessons,” Borisuk said. “I just love seeing how excited they get.”
Nine year old Sara Makowitz was humming Taylor Swift’s song “Blank Spaces” during a recent math test. She was singing about things that take up space and remembering ” a side is called the face”. She commented that it is easier to remember concepts with a song.
“Many kids in class were having trouble with geometry concepts, and the (Swift) song helped a lot,” she said.
