At one summer camp, in addition to cooking and computers, compassion is free and is an important part of camp activities.
Compassion Camp is not your typical day camp. For one thing, it is free. For another, it is focused on empowering kids who have been bullied, and fostering kindness among participants.
The camp is staffed by Service Learning students from Notre Dame High School who volunteer 15 to 25 hours each for planning and running the student led camp.
“We are the first in the area to do this camp, and we are the first to do a student-led camp,” Said Jennifer Roberts-O’Brian, a Notre Dame High School administrator. She also said that the idea for the camp started with the students, who put together all the activities.
“There are kids in the camp who have been victimized by bullying or mistreatment. They are looking for ways to empower themselves. Stories have already started coming out in day one that have touched other campers,” Roberts-O’Brian said. One objective is to transform participants into leaders at their own schools.
