A project promoting high school students’ outreach to veterans is expected to continue into a second year.
Danville High School students want the project they launched last year helping homeless veterans will become a community effort.
Fourteen students developed Help a Hero as part of the Future Problem Solvers program. The civic service project was presented by eight of them at the Future Problem Solvers International competition at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
DHS senior Cole Cunningham explained the project student’s decided upon after recognizing a serious need to help veterans.
“We had this idea for a long time, but it needed a more mature group of students,” he said. “At the VA (Veterans Affairs), you can’t volunteer until you’re 15.”
Students went out into the community, connecting with people at a local food pantry.
“We asked if they were veterans or if they knew any at-risk veterans,” Cole said.
