One school district is feeding children this summer by serving lunch with books at the same time.
The traveling school buses in Pasco County, Florida, that provide meals to children during summer vacation also have a bonus to offer kids during the summer months. Not only do they get a bag lunch, but they get books of their choice to read as well.
The Feeding and Reading program got started this summer, thanks to the ideas of assistant superintendent Ray Bonti. He had heard children say during the daily summer lunch that they were bored, with little to do. He knew the district had an unused bus, and he knew that some books were being taken out of circulation.
He figured that lunch and books go perfect together.
District spokeswoman Linda Cobbe coordinated the initiative. “We know kids forget a lot of what they learn. We are doing what we can to prevent that.”
