Common Core standards and ways to teach math have been around for four years, and while kids are mastering the skills, a district has videos show parents how kids learn math.
The concepts of math are more in focus, rather than just procedures for problem solving. According to Paulding County School District Math Coordinator Laura Freeman, the results are noticeable. “In the past two years, we really started seeing the gains,” she said.
Parents still have difficulty with the new methods. “A lot of the parents still teach the way they were taught and that doesn’t help us a whole lot because the kids want to do it their parents’ way,” Freeman said.
The district has created online tutorials for parents to view, so they can help their children at home. The videos were produced with money from a two year $1 million federal Math Science Partnership grant.
