The new school year is upon us. For many of you this is an exciting time, but for some of you this is a stressful time because you remember how your child struggled with reading last year. Is there something you can do to make this year different? Is this the year that your child will really start to ‘get’ it?

Learning to read can become easier for your child. There are several steps to implement when your child needs reading help.

First, identify what the problem is:

1. Is phonics (sounding out words) difficult for your child?
2. Does your child ‘know’ phonics but still has difficulty sounding out new words?
3. Is reading stilted, slow, or inaccurate?
4. Is spelling difficult for your child?
5. Does your child comprehend what they read?
6. Can your child use the information they have read (write a summary)?

Second, speak with your child’s teacher to let them know your concerns. Let them know how it has been for your child in the past.

Third, get some tools or support that is research based that can really make a difference. And the additional support can be done in short increments – between 5 and 20 minutes a day. Research from the University of Florida states that reading fluency practice that is only 5 or 6 minutes a day results in substantial gains. It’s the daily practice that makes the difference.

Learning to Read Research Based Tools Should Include:

1. Phonemic awareness
2. Phonics
3. Fluency
4. Vocabulary building
5. Text comprehension
6. Incorporate visual, auditory, and tactile kinesthetic modes of learning

Step-by-step instruction based on brain research – neuro-science

We learn three ways, by hearing, seeing, and doing (auditory, visual, and tactile/kinesthetic modes of learning). And there are 9 areas of perception in each of those ways. So the reading help you want to give your child should include those areas. That is how those areas become stronger. When the areas of perception are working efficiently, reading becomes easier. The Awaken the Scholar Within Programs do just that. They teach you step-by-step how to help your child improve their skills.
