There are many stories in a summer reading program for boys, and they are not just the books that are being read.
The big story is that boys are excited to read and continue to push their reading to higher limits. In Rapid City, SD, outside the library at the Club for Boys, some kids even try to get inside early.
Lynn Lafferty is assistant education director at the club. Within an hour of opening one day, she had a waiting list of boys hoping to secure a spot in the library for reading. This summer has been the most successful one that Lafferty has participated in during her more than 30 years as an educator.
Over 350 boys participate in the reading program year round, with about 40 or 50 in the summer. Reading is encouraged through fun activities, goal setting, and themes such as Alien Week or Library Olympics.
