There are new changes for a school of leaders, as one elementary school is embracing the status of “Leadership Academy”
At Highland Elementary School, nearly 40 new students will enter this year, and benefit from schoolwide practices from the books “The Leader In Me” and “The 7 Habits of Happy Kids”. These are kid friendly versions of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”.
Highland is the first in the area to use the leadership oriented methods that develop lifelong character traits. Only one other school in Northeast Tennessee uses these methods, at East Tennessee State University’s University School.
“This initiative empowers students to become leaders and to believe in themselves,” said principal Brenda Ottinger. “We know each child has gifts that we just need to help them find. Every child is and can be a leader.”
The Leadership Academy is not just a new academic program. According to Ottinger, it is about the way that students and staff conduct themselves.
