Second graders are connecting with the world, as a tech savvy second grade teacher has her kids go global with an international Skype-a-thon and blogs.
Sprawled on a carpet that doubles as a map of the United States, a small group of second-graders focused intently on the electronic tablets in front of them. They were working on their blogs.
Asked what she was doing, 7-year-old Phoebe Martin whispered, “Typing what I did this weekend.” And when she is finished? “I publish it.”
Second grade teacher Beverly Ladd is leading this group of children in New challenges. Last year she organized a global 24 hour Skype-a-thon which included her class and students from Asia, Africa, and Australia, and researchers in Antarctica.
“It was the fastest 24 hours of my life, but the most precious,” Ladd said.
This year her class is participating in a global blogging challenge, and working on readying their blogs for publication.
