Project Lead The Way shows kids how to love STEM subjects, and elementary students are loving it, even as young as kindergarten.
At University Elementary School in Caddo, Louisiana, students are enthusiastically embracing STEM activities. Teachers also are enjoying new ways to teach, and engage students with attention, helping them focus and solve problems.
In the kindergarten classroom, Charles Moser shouted “eyeballs” from the top of a classroom table. When his students looked up, they saw him with a magnifying glass examining leaves the children had collected earlier. Students shared the magnifying glass and looked at the veins on the leaf.
“It is projected that by 2018 there’s going to be 1.2 million jobs that will go unfilled because we don’t have the people with the right degrees or even interests to fill,” Moser said. University Elementary is the first school in the district to participate in Project Lead The Way.
