A new virtual classroom expands opportunities for students by allowing them to to connect to the high school a mile away without having to travel by bus.
At Harrisonville Middle School, eighth grade advanced math students used to take a bus to the high school for a geometry class. However now, with an increase in class enrollment, the trip is not feasible. In partnership with the high school, the school launched a virtual classroom through Google Hangouts.
“The high school was very open to doing it,” said Harrisonville Middle School Principal Chris Grantham. “(They) wanted to showcase technology so we thought, why not a virtual classroom.”
There were a few bugs the first day, but the cameras worked sufficiently for the class to proceed.
“We were flying by the seat of our pants that first day,” Grantham said. “We have a great tech department at central office. They set it up immediately, then fixed bugs the first week.”
