Its a simple four letter word you don’t hear too much about, but teachers and students are changing school culture with grit.
The New Oxford American Dictionary says that grit refers to strength, resolve, and character. Inside Davis Middle School, the word is on the lips of teachers, administration, and students.
The word is changing school culture. According to Principal Erin North, the change started with a TED Talks video from YouTube. The video was about how the word “grit” relates to the growth mindset.
She challenged the staff to read about growth mindset, and apply it to their teaching. “After reading the book, I thought, ‘We could actually use this,’” said life skills teacher Betty Griffiths.
“Everything starts with the staff and a change in language we use,” North said. “We are trying to put a positive spin on everything. The students have embraced it. It allows them to admit when they made a mistake.”
