With the help of a local bakery, teachers show first graders that Math Expressions create real world examples of problem solving.
Math Expressions is a style of teaching which encourages learning math with real world examples. First grade students in Emily Lamott’s class at Hillside Elementary are making that connection, with the help of Sunflour Bakehaus in downtown Farmington.
Lamott’s plan is to use examples from Sunflour Bakehaus in math word problems during the school year.
“I want you to know what we’re talking about when I talk about how the bakery makes something, or if we have three cookies and they make four more, how many cookies do we have in all,” Lamott told students.
Lamottvwill also talk about the bakery in social studies lessons, as an example of what makes up a community.
