Michelle Obama’s Salad Bars to Schools initiative is benefiting one school district with popular and healthy choices.
At Mentor High School, students enjoy one of three salad bars in the district that were donated by Marc’s and Del Monte Fresh Produce, as part of the “Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools” initiative.
“Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools” is part of the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” campaign, and is designed to encourage students to make healthy choices and have fresh fruits and vegetables available.
According to Jeni Lange, supervisor of nutrition services for the Mentor School District, students are still learning the best ways to use the salad bars, but they are using them.
“They are selecting fresh produce to top their hamburgers and sandwiches as well as making side salads, grabbing a piece of fruit and some are just taking veggies to dip with dressing,” Lange said. “We’re seeing our students take, and eat, a lot more fruits and veggies.”
The objective is to allow children to incorporate a variety of foods into their diet and learn to make healthy choices about what they eat.
