By focusing on career readiness, a state department of education is supporting student career choices. In Wyoming, education officials do not believe that students are getting enough support at school for their chose career preparation. They are seeing a gap with job applicants in the local area and nationwide between the skills they have, and what employers want.
The Wyoming Department of Education has created the Wyoming Career Readiness Council, working together with businesses and colleges to improve career readiness support in all Wyoming schools, including college.
The Council of Chief State School Officers compiled a report last year, “Opportunities and Options: Making Career Preparation Work for Students”. That is the basis for recommendations of the Department of Education. The primary recommendations are:
Partnering with employers to identify what skills students most need to succeed in the workforce.
Raising the bar for the quality of career readiness programs.
Including career readiness in accountability systems.
