It’s an innovative way for students to get what they need: The class wants calculators so they made a music video.
At Ames High School, the sixth period advanced Algebra 2 class is dancing their way to a new and much needed set of graphing calculators. In addition to the calculators, they hope to win a visit from actess Mayim Bialik of The Big Bang Theory.
The students changed lyrics to Walk the Moon’s popular “Shut Up and Dance” to include lyrics about graphing calculators. They also choreographed a dance and created a 30 second video the class posted online. The effort is for a contest sponsored by Texas Instruments.
Teacher Melissa Allman first say the contest on Twitter. “This summer, Texas Instruments tweeted about their national contest where you could win a classroom set of graphing calculators and a visit from Mayim Bialik, the star of “The Big Bang Theory,” Allman said. “She is also a neuroscientist, so it would be great to have a scientist come and speak to the class. It’s also great to have women who are in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields that students can look up to.”
Students had the choice of taking a photo or posting a 30 second video about why they love Texas Instrument calculators. The class opted to have fun with the project, and enter the contest with the video.
