Through community outreach with the arts, kids go beyond the classroom to teach about acceptance of others.
In the Gibraltar School District, middle school students have created poetry, short films, and art on the topic of acceptance.
The theme of the Friends of Gibralter Acceptance Project this year is “celebrating uniqueness.” The finished projects will be displayed at the Link Gallery of Children’s Art at Door Community Auditorium.
Earlier this year students visited the Team Leadership Center and discussed their ideas of acceptance with adults. They spoke about bullying, stereotypes, and teasing.
“It sort of evened the playing field of students that are super loud … and students that are more quiet,” said Vinni Chomeau, Friends of Gibraltar coordinator.
FOG is teaming up with English teacher Angie Hallett and art teacher Laura Meikle, as well as Write On, Door County and local film director Chris Opper.
