At Dubuque Senior High School, coffee brews up opportunities for life skill students. The daily work and interaction with the school community gives students in the life skills and school to work programs valuable life experience.
The Ram Fan Coffee Express opened in mid November. Fifteen students team up to provide coffee, hot chocolate and apple cider to teachers and staff.
“They’re all engaged,” said special education teacher Laura Oberhoffer. “None of them are standing around bored.”
The school based coffee business is working better than teachers expected. Students are the managers, writing orders, making drinks, checking inventory. “In a way, we were a little nervous to give them so much responsibility, but it’s been awesome seeing them grow and seeing them enjoy it.”
School based businesses are a growing trend. Students learn important social, vocational, reading and math skills through the business.
