Fourth graders from Lincoln Elementary took a virtual field trip to Antarctica to see some Adelie penguins.
The students in Bret Williams’ class went on the virtual field trip courtesy of Skype and Microsoft Education.
“I thought, ‘How can we bring the world into the classroom?’” Williams said. “We can’t go to Antarctica, but we can go on a virtual field trip.”
The trip was facilitated in Antarctica by National Science Foundation member Jean Pennycook. She lives in Fresno, but researches the Adelie penguins in Cape Royds, Antarctica.
“All of these kids have seen penguins in movies, but to see them live, coming up to me as I sit there, to have the penguin respond to their voices and then come up and nibble at my shoe,” Pennycook said. “…That catches their attention way more than a slick, million-dollar Walt Disney production.”
