A junior high school is getting new classrooms in a new building, and a model classroom offers a preview of things to come.
The model classroom space is installed in the library, and is available more than a year before the new intermediate elementary school will open.Over the semester break, the custodians and maintenance staff added white walls which hold dry erase boards, technology for collaborations, and furniture that is easy to move.
The temporary space gives teachers an idea what the classrooms will look like before committing to moving to the new building. In the new structure, fifth graders who currently attend elementary school will be in the new building, as well as sixth graders who currently attend the middle school.
Perhaps the most striking aspect of the new classroom model is that ist is spacious, and workspaces are designed differently. There is no more of the traditional set up of desks lined up in a row with the teacher’s desk at the front. There is storage for materials, and supplies, but the teacher desk is missing. Teachers have a desk, but not in the classroom.
